Chapter Nine

The summer blurred by with joyous days, many I love you’s, and nights of tangled limbs. She had Gramma over for dinner once a week. She spent some time getting to know Lily and exchanging recipes. She even renewed her friendship with Sunny. Everyone had been right. Sunny and Beast had been on her side the entire time, and there were absolutely no hard feelings over her drugging Beast.

The men loved bringing her gifts—sometimes just a handful of wildflowers. Once, a deck of cards. Another time was a television vidcam that they rarely used because they loved to sit together and talk about their lives. They had plans for surveyors to come out and mark a small area in the mountain to use as a garage for their equipment so they wouldn’t need to travel to Systems to pick up their tools each day. They’d offered again to build her a bedroom of her own, but she just didn’t see the need. Hell, if she wanted time alone, she could always head to the hot springs cavern.

She did order another large pillow for the living area so they could have guests visit. She’d arranged the two to face each other with the long table sitting between them.

She played with brighter fabrics to cover the windows and skylight. She found it fascinating that someone even thought of a skylight in the side of a mountain, so they appeased her curiosity by taking her to see the other end. To her surprise, it was built at an angle at the shallow edge of the hill where they lived.

“Mirrors placed along the inside carry the light down to us,” Jett explained. “But when the snow falls, it doesn’t get inside and weigh on the glass.”

“Who in the world thought of something this intricate?” she asked, bewildered.

He looked at her. “We did.”

“Are you kidding me?” Her guys were geniuses.

And out here in the light, she noticed something for the first time. Along with the leaves on the trees not being as bright, Jett’s color seemed more muted though Brax looked normal.

Her eyes narrowed as she studied Jett.

“Fall approaches,” Jett said, with a shrug. His skin was more yellow than green.

“What does that mean? Baby, are you sick?” She placed her hand on his cheek, but he didn’t feel warm. From behind her, Brax wrapped his arms around her waist, leaning low enough to kiss her neck.

“No, we’re not sick, my love. It’s just what we do. We hibernate. Remember when you first met us and we were covered in a gel? That gel grows so thick that it creates an outer layer. A cocoon. When we are done regenerating new cells, which heals our sickened cells, we break free from the hardened shell.”

“That’s why I didn’t hear from you when we were supposed to meet?”

Jett looked down briefly. “Yes.”

That wasn’t the whole story. She could tell by the way he looked at her and turned his eyes from her quickly.

“How many times have you been in this hibernation?” she asked.
